How do you get a graduate job in an NGO?

Getting a graduate job with a non-governmental organisation (NGO) is not generally highly paid. Despite that, this sector is particularly hard to get into due to the increased number of graduates wishing to pursue this field in order to work with issues they are passionate about. Therefore, trying to obtain a graduate entry level position is often difficult. In order to stand out from the crowd, you will often require to volunteer and gain several years experience. Your university may have a volunteer programme but there also may be some volunteering opportunities in your local area. This can still be applied if you have already graduated, but obtaining internships are a great way to gain experience.

You will also need to decide what type of NGO you would like to work for. They can be grouped into: Charitable, Service, participatory and empowering orientation.

Overall, this sector requires a lot of previous experience and as such, be prepared to volunteer. This sector is also fuelled by passion, so do not expect high salaries.
